About Le Cerle de Vins de Bordeaux
Le Cercle de Grands Vins de Bordeaux is formed by two Bordeaux winegrowers' organizations - Cercle Rive Droite for the Right bank and Cercle Rive Gauche for the Left bank.
Cercle Rive Droite was founded in July 2002 by Alain Raynaud. It groups together 143 chateaux from the Right bank of Gironde river, all of which share a common fundamental focus on quality and personalities of their wines, and respect ethical practices with regard to production and the way the wines are taken to market. Properties in Cercle Rive Droite come from either of these appellations: Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur, Entre-Deux-Mers, Loupiac, Sainte-Foy Bordeaux, Côtes de Bordeaux, Blaye, Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux, Côtes de Bourg, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, Francs Côtes de Bordeaux, Pomerol, Lalande de Pomerol, Fronsac, Canon Fronsac, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, Montagne Saint-Emilion, Lussac Saint-Emilion and Puisseguin Saint-Emilion.
In March 2013, Alain Raynaud brought the Cercle to the Left Bank, setting up a sister organization Cercle Rive Gauche. The criteria to be part of it are essentially estates' passion and effort on wine quality - the same common goal as Cercle Rive Droite. According to Alain Raynaud, 'this new group is filling a need for a new organization able to market the more affordable quality estates on the Left Bank.' Cercle Rive Gauche is chaired by Francis Boutemy.
